Whirlwind Taste of L.A. and Hollywood Behind the Scenes
9:30am-5:00pm

Los Angeles, 'The City of Angels,' is filled with unique sights that make this one of the most popular destinations in the world. Los Angeles consists of five unique regions, each with its own character. This is Hollywood's most authentic tour offering a bit of its legendary gossip! You will see many of Hollywood's most famous landmarks including Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Sign. You will also see many great but lesser known landmarks such as the El Capitan Theatre (Disney's premiere theatre), Grauman's Egyptian Theatre (where the movie premiere was born), the Blossom Room in the Roosevelt Hotel (site of the first Academy Awards ceremony) and the only fully intact "speakeasy" in Los Angeles.

Birds of the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve Wetlands
1:00pm-5:00pm

Located just 20 minutes from the Long Beach Convention Center, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach is one of southern California’s most significant coastal wetlands.  About 550 acres of historic Bolsa Chica (“little bag” in Spanish) lowlands were restored in the early 2000s to become a wildlife area where millions of birds travel, rest, feed, and nest along the Pacific Flyway.  Over 220 species of western US bird species have been recorded in the area.  We can expect to see a large variety of ducks and geese, wading shorebirds, egrets and herons, terns and gulls, White and Brown Pelicans, and raptors, and more!  The Bolsa Chica Wetlands also harbors three nationally or state threatened/endangered species – California Least Tern, Snowy Plover, and Belding's Savannah Sparrow – in addition to the rare Light-footed Clapper Rail.  Exotic/introduced species, such as Black Swan, Egyptian Goose, Orange Bishop, Nutmeg Mannikin, and Pin-tailed Whydah also occur in the Wetlands.

Our trip will take advantage of a low tide rising throughout the afternoon – making it an ideal time for shorebird viewing!  Participants can visit the Bolsa Chica Interpretive Center, which offers live animal exhibits, aquaria, maps, and information about Bolsa Chica and wetland science.  We will return at the end of the day to a comfortable Long Beach eatery near the Long Beach Convention Center for an optional comparison of lists and to share trip experiences before taking part in the Annual Meeting opening events.

Trip will depart from the Long Beach Convention Center at.  Please arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time.

Griffith Observatory Tour
11:15am-3:45pm

After four years of remodeling and renovating, the world famous Griffith Observatory has re-opened its doors to the public, seventy years after it first welcomed guests. Its unique architecture and scenic location combined with a general interest in astronomy and space has made it one of the most famous and most visited landmarks in Southern California. The very first exhibit included the Foucault pendulum designed to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. Since then the Observatory has been used for a number of purposes included training astronauts for the Apollo mission. The Observatory includes a live planetarium featuring science and space related displays. Located in the heart of Los Angeles with commanding views of Downtown, Hollywood and the Pacific Ocean, this observatory is a sight to be seen. You will have free time to explore the brand new observatory and enjoy some of the world’s most interesting exhibits.

2nd Annual Meet Your Mentor Reception
6pm-8pm

Are you an early or mid-career professional looking for a mentor? Are you interested in serving in SETAC governance? Join us for an informal reception and enjoy drinks with potential mentors from various career sectors or talk with SETAC Board members about their experiences serving in SETAC governance.

The Meet Your Mentor Reception, hosted by the SETAC Career Development Committee, has been expanded this year to support two goals: 1) facilitate the connection of early and mid-career SETAC members with future mentors who have a wealth of experience to share about setting career goals, coping with delicate ethical issues, resolving and managing workplace conflict, or learning how to find a balance between work and life; and 2) provide a forum for SETAC members who might consider serving in SETAC governance to obtain information regarding available opportunities. SETAC members representing academia, government, and private business sectors will be available to provide professional insight and career advice. In addition, SETAC members currently or previously serving in Governance roles, including several members of the SETAC Board of Directors, will attend and discuss opportunities for individuals interested in taking more active roles with the Society. This is an excellent networking opportunity but space is limited so please register early. The $15 price of the ticket includes admission to the event and 2 drink tickets good for beer, wine, or soft drinks. Additional drinks beverages may be purchased at the event.

If you are interested in volunteering at the reception, or have questions about the event, please contact Ted Valenti (ted_valenti@baylor.edu) or Judy Schofield (jschofield3@csc.com). Sign up via the meeting registration form.
